Description

For those who want a real taste of the ancient Americas, this Coba and Tulum tour from Playa del Carmen is just the thing for you. Taking in two historic Mayan ruins, you’ll get the chance to see the remains of this once-great civilization up close and personal. What’s more, you will also have the chance to swim in one of the Riviera’s Mayas famous cenote, so you’ll be right in the heart of nature.

Your day starts with a Coba tour from Playa del Carmen, where you will be picked up from your hotel in our air-conditioned van, and taken directly to the Coba ruins. The ancient city of Coba was an important place for the Mayan people, and is still home to a breathtaking series of Mayan pyramids. Your expert Coba tour guide will explain to you just how significant the Coba ruins once were, and point out the many ancient carvings and artworks that teach us about Mayan religious rites and ceremonies. As the site is less well-known than places like Chichen Itza, nature has started to reclaim the area, leaving it a delicate mixture of the natural and manmade which makes this a very special place indeed. If you’re feeling brave, you can even climb the highest of the pyramids for a stunning view across the treetops. Most Mayan ruins are off-limits to climbers, so this is a unique opportunity that’s not to be missed.

Once you’re done at the Coba ruins, your tour then takes you to the Tulum ruins, another notable Mayan city. It is the only known Mayan city located by the sea, and was an important port in its day for trading turquoise and jade. As with Coba, you’ll be treated to a Tulum ruins tour, where you’ll discover just why the Mayans chose to build a city here, and snake your way in and out of the 784-meter-long city walls, taking in all the key sights. Once the tour is over, you’ll have a chance to explore for yourself. Whether you want to take the narrow path up the cliffs to the Castillo and Temple of the Frescoes, with its huge mural depicting the Mayan’s idea of the afterlife, or just relax on the beautiful Caribbean shores, the choice is yours.

Your day doesn’t end there, though. This part of Mexico is world famous for its cenotes, or sinkholes, which open up into vast caverns filled with cool, clear water. Gran Cenote is possibly the most popular of these, and sits just outside the Tulum ruins. As you descend into the cave, you’ll be faced with a breathtaking sight- a stunning natural cave that you’re free to explore for yourself and by guide. The water is some 159 meters deep, making it the perfect place to snorkel and see the cenote fish, or just swim around in. When the sun is directly overhead, the whole cave is lit by the sparkling waters- an unforgettable view. There are even tiny turtles living in the cenote, but don’t worry- they don’t bite! Gran Cenote is the perfect place to soak up Mexico’s wildlife and natural environment.

Once your Tulum tour from Playa del Carmen is over, you’ll be taken directly back to your hotel for some much-needed rest. This day is packed with unforgettable moments, so it’s ideal for anyone who wants to make the most of their time in Mexico. Since it’s so popular, though, our tours from Playa del Carmen fill up first- so make sure you book your place today!
