Description

TIKKA XP Headlamp with 1 high-output LED, 1 red LED and five lighting modes (three continuous and two blinking) and Wide Angle lens The TIKKA XP headlamp integrates two light sources as well as a Wide Angle lens with a simple open-close feature, allowing the user to choose between a long distance focalized beam and flood beam proximity lighting. This headlamp is equipped with a white high-output LED and a red LED. The white LED delivers 60 lumens in maximum mode and lights up to 60 meters. In economic mode, it can reach a burn-time of 160 hours. The red LED provides lighting to preserve night vision or to become a blinking light for increased safety, for example in an urban environment, etc. TIKKA XP can be used with lithium batteries to decrease weight or increase performance in cold weather.

This item is exactly as described, and I daresay a rather good price. It is brighter than my old tikka, compact, lightweight, and comfortable. This is so much better than a Walmart headlamp it’s not even funny, and it really isn’t much more expensive. If you plan an being able to see with your headlamp than get this one. I have not tried reading with it, but I think that the low setting would be plenty dim enough to not be hard on the eyes.

OK everyone who have been reading all the reviews (like myself) on which headlamp to purchase I hope you find this one interesting. I had a hard time deciding which headlamp to purchase from reading all the reviews. After much reading I decided to purchase both the Black Diamond Headlamp and the Petzl Tikka Improved Lumen Xp2. After they arrived, it took me 15 minutes using both units to decide to keep the Petzl. I sent the Black Diamond back to Amazon. The Black Diamond was less money than the Petzl and it was obvious why? It was flimsy and cheap. The Petzl was much more solid and well built. The main light was brighter with the Petzl and the wide angle (very convenient flip up) was much brighter as well. The red light feature was also brighter with the Petzl. I don’t want to go on and on about the two lights and cause anyone to get bored, but if you want some good advise and save yourself some time, just spend the extra money on the Petzl. You’ll be glad you did…I know I am. I’ll be buying one for my wife as well.

I love all things Petzl and have the previous XP2 headlamp. So I was very excited to get a new and improved lumens version. If you didn’t have a previous revision(60 lumens), then you should be very happy what what you are getting. I am, on the other hand, not so much. It is brighter, no question about it. But Petzl is loosing me on two things.

First, the tint of the new “White” is slightly purple. 10 years ago I would be happy as a clam with this tint. But in this day and age it’s a little strange that a respectable company such as Petzl is doing it. It’s not horrible by any stretch of the imagination, just a little disappointing. On the other hand, most people won’t even notice it.

Second, the new “Red” is very, very dim comparing to the previous revision. It’s usable, just not as useful as the older revision.

Having said that, I am going to keep this headlamp because I got it for a song(well, kind of), and one can never have too many headlamps (yeah, right).

A word of advise. Unless you are a treehagger, and I am saying it in the most endearing way possible, avoid reachargable batteries and Petzl Core rechargable battery. Why? Because your 80 lumens headlamp will perform like a 50-55 lumens headlamp with those low voltage batteries. I suggest either Energizer Lithium or better yet, new and awesome, Duracell Quantum batteries. Check your local Costco or Sams Club for the best deal on those things.

Oh, and that whistle that is a part of the strap. I wouldn’t count on it if my life depended on it.

Nothing is perfect in this world and this headlamp is not either, but it’s much better then most in the same price range. I would buy it again and I would recommend it to a friend.

    Sincerely Yours
