Tuxtla Gutierrez, or Tuxtla, as it is more commonly known, is the capital and the largest city in Chiapas. This large metropolitan area is a major transport hub for the Chiapas region but is filled with many attractions of its own and is a wonderful base to explore the spectacular Chiapas countryside. In the town itself, you can visit the Science and Technology Museum and the Regional Museum of Chiapas which has a fantastic collection of Mexico and Chiapas archaeology and cultural history. Take a trip to the nearby indigenous villages in the surrounding highlands and learn about the customs of the native Mayan Tzotzil people. Don’t miss the El Chiflón waterfalls where you can trudge up 800 steps to the top for fantastic worthwhile views overlooking the waterfall or take the easy way out and have a swim in the natural pool at the base. Head to the spectacular Laguas de Montebello National park which contains over 50 natural lakes famous for their incredible green, blue and purple hues. Or visit the Pueblo Magico of Chiapa de Corza, a small town from where you can catch a boat to the scenic Sumidero Canyon National Park, one of the most visited tourist sites in Chiapas.
